When to use ThumTool
Use ThumTool when you need to inspect or save the public thumbnail renditions attached to a YouTube video without creating an account. It is deliberately narrow: URL in, available image sizes out.
Capabilities at a glance
| Need | ThumTool |
|---|---|
| Supported inputs | YouTube watch, short, embed, Shorts and live URLs; bare video IDs |
| Output | Each public JPEG rendition YouTube makes available for that video |
| Account | Not required |
| Published usage quota | None; normal service protections and upstream availability still apply |
| Video download | Not supported |
| Private-content bypass | Not supported |
| Custom timestamp capture | Not supported |
Why the narrow scope is useful
- Fast path: no editor, extension, or account is required for the thumbnail lookup.
- Explicit output: available renditions are labelled with their YouTube filenames and typical pixel dimensions.
- Safer proxy boundary: server-side JPEG requests are restricted to YouTube thumbnail CDN hosts, capped at 10 MiB (10,485,760 bytes), and never follow redirects.
- Clear limits: the tool does not present itself as a video downloader or a rights-bypass service.
Privacy and operator context
ThumTool is operated by SASU Dynamic Foundries in France and hosted by OVH in France. Your browser sends video URLs or IDs to ThumTool's server, which fetches images from YouTube and returns previews or downloads. The tool requires a current browser and internet access, but no account. Site styles are self-hosted. Optional Google Analytics is consent-gated. These are supporting facts; the primary reason to choose the tool is its focused thumbnail workflow.
Before reusing an image
Public availability is not a copyright licence. Use thumbnails you created, own, or have permission to reuse. For design research, take principles from the composition rather than copying another creator's artwork.
